Many types of gases are used every day in industry and in the home, where use is made of the positive characteristics of the gases concerned. Carbon dioxide or nitrogen are both used to keep meat, fish and other foodstuffs fresh. The catering trade makes use of carbon dioxide to tap your beer. Gases are used to keep human or animal material fresh in laboratories and hospitals. There are countless examples of situations where the positive characteristics of gases are used, even though there is a risk that these gases may have negative consequences for people.
To minimise risks and keep people and their environments safe, the government has introduced the Working Conditions Act. This act clearly states the hazards associated with specific gases and the safety measures that must be taken:
use of portable or fixed gas detectors
additional ventilation
wearing protective clothing, etc.
